Replay: Draw People with Rekha and Robyn

A deep-dive into people-drawing and illustrator life.
4

Edit: This video was originally just for Scribble Club members, but since Rekha kindly shared her time and insights, it felt only fair to make it available to all!

The drawing session with Rekha turned out to be even better than anticipated.

We’d planned to talk about five 20th century illustrators we admire (Mary Blair, E.H. Shepard, Walter Trier, Aurelius Battaglia, and Edward Gorey) and to do some drawing inspired by their styles. And we did do that. But we also ended up chatting about the bits we find tricky when drawing people, sharing drawing wisdom that we’ve learned from experience, and flipping through sketchbooks.

It was a really fun, chatty session - part sketch-along, part conversation - and I think it turned out to be both silly and surprisingly informative (which is how I like most things to be).

This is a drawing video that you can to draw along with, or just sit back and enjoy with a cup of tea.

Here is the PDF of all our inspiration and drawing references!

P.S.
Sadly, my slow and overworked computer didn’t manage to save the recording of our live drawing process - Rekha had a camera set up to show her sketchbook while she drew, but - alas! - that didn’t make it into the final video. I’ve added photos of our finished illustrations at the bottom of this post, so you can still see where we ended up.

More opportunities to draw together: Drawing Play-Dates!

🦵May 2025: Legs and Feet

When drawing people, faces and hands are usually the most expressive, but what about our overlooked bottom-halves? Let's draw the humble legs and feet during this session and see how expressive (and silly) they can be… Sign up here.

🕊 June 2025: Time to draw some birdies!

This will be an easy-going session where we take inspiration from the bird world and reduce them to the silliest, simplest versions of themselves. We’re talking blobs with beaks here...
Bring along something that makes bold marks and dries quickly (like thick markers, gouache, or anything messy), and something else you can use to draw over the top (like coloured pencils, oil pastels, or paint pens) or just whatever you’ve got lying around! Sign up here.

My paid subscribers - The Scribble Club - get a few more:

29th of April: Mixed-Media Madness

We’re going to have a playful, experimental hour with ALL our art materials! Bring out your everyday pencils, your under-used paints, your ignored pastels - the more the merrier - and let’s explore. We’ll start by swatching everything to see how our materials behave, then mix, layer, and combine them in unexpected ways.
The goal is to break free from how we think we should use our tools and discover exciting new techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just love to experiment, this session will help you see your art supplies in a whole new way.

19th of May: Feeling Colours

Let’s have a playful, experimental hour with all the COLOURS!
We’ll be digging out every colour we can find in whatever media we've got lying around, and then scribble some colour palettes to reflect different emotions. What colour is tranquility? How about triumph? Enthusiasm? Well, I hope you have plenty of that last one, because we’re going to play around with colour combinations, chat about how colour can shape the mood of an image, and try a few simple drawing prompts to experiment with emotion-palettes in practice.
As usual, this is a relaxed, colourful session for anyone who loves experimenting and wants to add some feelings to their scribbles.

If you can’t make it to the calls live, never fear: the replays will go out to all Scribble Club members within a week or two.
